About Us

The mission of the Friends of the Long Valley Public Library is to facilitate the joyful experience of reading and learning.  The Friends group is dedicated to raising funds to support this goal by covering Long Valley Public Library needs not provided by the Mendocino County Library System.  We intend to provide a welcoming, multicultural, respectful, community-based library experience for all.

What Do We Provide?

The Friends are committed to providing increased access to reading, literacy and a culture of curiosity in our community.

  • The Book Sale – Come browse a wide variety of fiction, non-fiction and kid’s books at VERY reasonable prices.  Open Friday afternoons.
  • Literacy Tutoring
  • Credit for Volunteers in High School
  • Story Time for the younger kids
  • Providing low- or no-cost books for children to other local groups providing similar services

How Did This All Begin?

The idea started in 2014 when the community was offered a retired book mobile by the county.  After community visioning gatherings, a Board was formed to bring the unit (and a part time Library Staffer) to Laytonville.  It was finally delivered in December of 2015!  In February, the County decided they could not, after all, put a county employee in the book mobile.  Of course we were disappointed (understatement of the year!), but we were not deterred!!! The Friends will continue to operate the Book Sale, raise funds and awareness, and provide literacy related services for our community as we search for a site for our own

Volunteer With the Friends!

*Book Room – Duties can include shelving books, taking cash and writing receipts, promoting membership, tidying up, schmoozing with your friends.

* Activities – Do you have a skill or passion you would like to share?  Teach an after-school art class?  Start a book club?  Writer’s workshop?  Knitting Circle? Share your knowledge of an interesting topic?  We have the space for that!

*Behind the scenes – Online Bookstore: fine used books are a great income source for the Friends – can you help?  Includes researching prices, data entry, and/or shipping.

* Fundraising – Periodic help with events – organize or help with Spring and Fall fundraisers – Includes planning, presenting and promoting in a team setting.

*Site Committee – Help with the preliminary research – finding architects, civil engineers, contractors, sign painters, identify suitable sites, etc.  When we find the right location, we want to be ready to move!

*Promotion – Keep us in the public eye!  You might manage our Facebook page, or distribute articles and promo materials to radio and newspapers.  Or… put up posters around town.  Or… help write, print, and mail the Newsletter.

Become a Member!

Membership provides funds for The Friends of the Long Valley Public Library to continue the work of bringing a full-service County Library Station to Laytonville.  Imagine an actual Library with internet access and all the benefits of a trained Library Staff!

Help Someone Improve Their Reading Skills!

Literacy Volunteers of America in Willits provides training and materials so YOU can be a literacy tutor right here in Laytonville.  Tutors have one student and the complete support of the Literacy Volunteers group.  Tutors and students usually meet once a week.

Get Out There and Promote!

Spend a few hours manning (or womanning) a booth at local events like the Healthy Start Spring Faire or Halloween Carnival.  Join a friend to “Table” at Geiger’s Market or the Post Office signing up new members and letting the community know what the Friends of the Long Valley Public Library does.
