The Mendocino County Observer is Laytonville's local newspaper. They mainly specialize in local and county news around politics and other feature stories. Ad space and subscriptions are available through contacting them.

Articles are free, as well as letters to the editor.

The Observer has been around since 1987, however before the Shields' took it over, it was the Laytoville Ledger, which began in 1978.
