Meet Our Team

Jayma Spence

Healthy Start Coordinator
E-mail Jayma Spence

Jayma moved to Laytonville with her parents and began Kindergarten at Laytonville Elementary School, and graduated from Laytonville High School in 2000. After attending Mendocino College, she graduated from U.C. Santa Barbara with a B.A. in Sociology. After graduating from college, she moved back home to Laytonville, and began working for Healthy Start in 2007. In 2010, Jayma was hired as the Healthy Start Coordinator. Jayma is passionate about her community and her mission is making Laytonville a safer and healthier place for kids to grow up. Jayma works with Harwood Memorial Park to ensure that both organizations receive funding to sustain their efforts in serving the Laytonville Community. Jayma works from a collaborative approach, by getting community organizations and stakeholders to communicate regularly so that children and families can be effectively served. Along with her duties as a Harwood Park Board member, Healthy Start Coordinator and volunteer for many local causes, Jayma also Chairs the Family Resource Center Network of Mendocino County, and serves as a commissioner on the Mendocino County Policy Council of Children and Youth.

Nikki Waldon

Office Manager
E-mail Nikki Waldon

Nikki has been a part of our team the longest – she has worked at Healthy Start from practically the beginning – so her knowledge of the organization’s history is rich and extremely helpful. Nikki does everything for Healthy Start from answering the phones  to assisting people with Food Stamps and Medi-Cal applications; she does it all. Because Nikki grew up in Mendocino County and is an area local, she knows a lot of people in the community. Having Nikki around the office makes work feel like home, she bakes muffins and cookies for the team, and we go to her for “motherly” advice. Nikki is able to multi-task beyond anyone’s wildest dreams; with the phones ringing constantly and clients walking through the door, Nikki does her magic to make the office run efficiently, while maintaining our goal of providing a warm and welcoming atmosphere for our community to access services.

Roland Spence

DFC Project Assistant
E-mail Roland Spence

Roland (Rolo) Spence has been with Laytonville Healthy Start since 2007, when he was initially hired to take high school students on trips to the Willits Skate Park as a way to keep at-risk youth engaged in healthy activities. Since then, he has become a great asset to the organization. Between his youthful personality, artistic abilities and dedication to his community, Roland is able to bring a creative and exciting flair to most any situation. Kids love him, which is perfect for his position working as a mentor. Aside from his efforts at Healthy Start and Laytonville schools, he always seems to be involved in some sort of lofty endeavor. He is the founder and president of the Long Valley Skaters’ Association, an organization created to build and maintain a skate park in Laytonville. When he isn’t doing artwork as a graphic designer, he can be found working on his house with his lovely fiancé or skateboarding his heart out somewhere in the sun.
