Did you know that Laytonville has a beautiful community garden? It’s located on Harwood Rd, right next to the Garden Club and kitty corner to Harwood Hall. The community garden has an enthusiastic new group of volunteers who are getting the garden prepped and planted, and is looking for more local folks interested in working in the garden. This is a great chance to meet new people and get out in the garden, as well as get some great fresh vegetables. If you are interested in having your own plot, some may be available, or you can help work in the whole garden. Produce will go to volunteers and be donated to local organizations.

The garden is off to a great start due to all the hard work that folks have put in over the years, but it still needs some love. What can you do to help? First and foremost we need volunteers to come help out. Work days are Tuesdays in the morning starting around 10 a.m. and Thursdays in the afternoon starting around 3 p.m. Please stop by and meet the garden folks to help out and learn more. Secondly, we need donations and money. The garden runs on volunteer hours and donations, but water isn’t free and we have a pretty hefty water bill leftover from last year, so cash donations would be greatly appreciated and can be made at Healthy Start. Lastly, we always need tools and supplies. In particular we are looking for a wheelbarrow, DIG timers, hard rakes, shovels, digging forks, hose nozzles, work gloves, amendments (calphos, gypsum, chicken manure, oyster shell, kelp) and of course, seeds and starts. Donations can be dropped off at Healthy Start, or at the garden on a work day. Please don’t drop donations off at the garden unless there is someone there to receive them.

If you are interested in volunteering, please call Cee Bass at (707) 367-8890, or stop by on a Tuesday morning or Thursday afternoon to meet the garden crew. You can also send an email to the garden or friend us on Facebook at Laytonville Garden.
